Are You Making Money Yet?
By Bill Garner
This question is asked of me time and time again. Individuals approach me expressing interest in starting a home-based business. The first question I am asked is, “Are you making money yet?” I hesitate to respond for several reasons. One, I never want to mislead someone into thinking that network marketing is a get-rich quick opportunity. Two, in order to answer the question truthfully, I have to paint a picture that for some dissuades them from jumping on board my business opportunity. However, a successful network marketer has to be prepared to answer this question and answer it truthfully. So what should you do if you are asked the question. Well, let me offer some tips!
First of all, if you are not yet making money, answer the question honestly. Don’t overhype your business opportunity! The network marketing industry has been tainted with “masters of deception” who sell their brand of Kool-Aid to unsuspecting, desperate individuals and families who are pursuing network marketing as a means to build a better life and financial future. The end result of these sleezy, underhanded tactics is an industry with a battered reputation and an assembly line of battered individuals who believe network marketers are nothing more than scam artists. Perception is 9/10 of reality, so if the perception is that we network marketers are scam artists, then the perception has become the reality for our industry. So, in order to clean up the image, we must begin to create a culture of honesty and transparency! If you aren’t making money yet, be honest and say so. When I first got started in this business, I made a commitment to tell prospects that I am in this business for the long haul. I made it very clear that what I am pitching is not a get rich quick opportunity. In fact, I go out of my way to tell individuals that if you are looking for a get-rich quick opportunity, you should probably look elsewhere because my opportunity is probably not in line with your hopes. Yes, I tend to lose some prospects with this approach, but in the end, I don’t believe it’s possible to build a successful team with a bunch of people looking to make quick bucks with little or no effort. So if you are not making money yet, tell people the truth. But be very adamant that while you aren’t making money yet, you intend to build a business that will create a lifestyle for you that can’t be duplicated in any other profession.
Now if you are making money, what should your response be? Again the best answer is an honest one, but please let me qualify my statement. Making money in any business requires hard work, determination, and perseverance. Successful network marketers adhere to some basic fundamental principles. Here they are!
1) They believe in their company’s products and opportunity! This is huge! If you pursue an opportunity and aren’t sold on the intrinsic value of the company’s products, you are doomed to fail! The products have to stand on their own merit.
2) They aren’t afraid to share!
3) They don’t overhype!
4) They don’t fear rejection!
5) They understand that success takes time!
6) They invest time in their team!
So if you are making money, please paint an accurate picture for your prospect. Let your prospect know that nothing in life comes easily, and don’t forget to remind them that you are committed to their success.
