Health Care Reform - What Does It Mean To Consumers
By Doug Lewin
I feel it neccessary to clarify some things regarding the Health Care Reform Act. As you know, the first "wave" of changes are now in effect in the form of PPACA (Patient Protection Affordable Care Act). PPACA is a list of preventative services that insurance carriers are now required to include in all major medical health insurance policies. Usage of these new benefits by the insured begin 1/1/11. At this time, carriers will institute rate increases to cover the financial load of these new additional services. What does this mean? Well, I guess it means that this new "Affordable" care will actually cost more, and for some folks, it could mean that coverage for themselves, their families, and their employees will now be unaffordable. This is unacceptable to me as a consultant, consumer, and as an American! Experts are forecasting that some carriers will increase premiums by 30%!!!! I know that come mid-term elections in November, I will be exercising my constitutional right to vote. There are, however, ways to position yourself correctly for this. Insurance companies are handling these changes in different ways. Some are raising rates on Jan. 1, some are raising rates now. The few that are raising rates now are doing so in order to guarrantee a rate for 12 months. I like this idea. It makes sense to me. Lock in that rate for as long as possible. My advice is simple: Be prepared, be pro-active, and position yourself correctly. Talk to an expert.
