More, More, More!!! - All About Organizing
By Leslie Tansey
As a Professional Organizer, I’ve come to realize that people don’t know how much they have actually acquired until it is time to move and pack it all up. But, there are things you can do that can help make this process easier:
- Firstly, do a whole house de-clutter twice a year (be sure not to forget the attic, basement or any on-site storage unit). Be sure to coincide one annual de-clutter just before the holidays, to optimize the opportunity with children. This valuable lesson will teach them that they shouldn’t get attached to “things”, which should make it easier for them later in life.
- NEVER pay for an off-site storage unit unless it is for a temporary reason only. The definition for temporary is: lasting, existing, serving, or effective for a time only; not permanent: a temporary need. To further define: a couple weeks to no more than three months. Otherwise, you will get use to paying for a unit that holds items you never intend to use again…out of sight out of mind, but with the added expense! - Thirdly, always make a list when going shopping, so that you prevent overspending and buying items that are not necessary. It is extremely important to know the purpose an item will have in your space before you purchase it to be sure that everything fits comfortably in the confines of your home.
- Lastly, place a basket in each closet in the house. When clothes no longer fit or you no longer like them, toss them in the basket. This will make closet weed out easier and with very little guesswork too!
If you need a strategy to attack your home, or you’re paying for an off-site storage unit and want to have more money in your pocket, give All About Organizing a call!
