Property Tax Appeals - Are You Paying Too Much?
By John Collier
It is very difficult for the average consumer to understand the property tax code. Most people trust that the local assessor will give them a fair shake, and that in the end, everyone has to pay property taxes. Well that part is true if you are a home owner, however not all home owners are paying only their fair share!
Many home owners are missing critical exemptions which can save them hundreds or thousands of dollars every year on property taxes. Others simply do not watch the assessments and allow their property to go unchecked for years, even decades.
I am a firm believer that every home purchase should come with a tri-fold brochure explaining to people how to check their assessment, and what to do if they feel it is wrong. As a tax paying home owner, it is your responsibility to make sure your assessment is correct, and that you are receiving all of the exemptions that you qualify to receive.
I am happy to provide free advice, and answer any questions people may have on property tax related questions. I will answer those questions in a series of articles on this site, so if you have a question, please forward it to me and I will turn it into an article for publication.
