The capacity of a bathroom fan is measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). This measurement takes into account how many feet of air the fan is able to move each minute. Larger bathrooms or bathrooms with steam showers or hot tubs will require a higher capacity fan. If the fan is not strong enough, excess moisture will collect in the bathroom and lead to the growth of mold and mildew. High capacity fans tend to be a bit louder. You may want to consider installing an ultra-quiet model to minimize the bath fan noise.
As a rule of thumb, you can calculate the necessary CFM for your bathroom by multiply the square footage of the room by 1.1. If there is not a fan available with that exact CFM, choose another that is relatively close in number.
For example:
If your bathroom is 10 feet x 10 feet, you have 100 sq. feet of space.
To calculate the CFM, multiply 100 x 1.1 = 110.
You'll want to select a fan that can handle 110 CFM.
