What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a company like yours?

Do your research. Start with the Better Business Bureau to see if they are accredited and if they have any complaints against them. If they do have complaints, see if and how they were resolved and how the customer was treated during that interaction. There are many fly-by-night service providers in this industry so ask lots of questions and definitely ask to see their work. Any company you choose should be able to give you solid references and/or letters of recommendations. This is a SERVICE industry - if the service is subpar, they will likely not have good references. Social media is also another tool you can use to assess the reputation and quality of service provided by a company - although it should not be solely relied upon. If they are actively posting updates, at least several a week, and comments are positive, it can be a good indicator that the company is probably worth looking into. Lastly, don't give anyone money until either A.) services have been performed, or B.) you have documentation or a contract that states what the company intends to do (mostly applies to landscaping).
