What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a company like yours?
|

A:

Always question quotations and proposals to get to to details. Always make certain you are comparing apples to apples.
For instance, someone may quote "concrete pad" and the depth of the concrete and amount of steel can make a tremendous difference in cracking and settling. A 3" pad with #3 bars 18" on center will crack about 4x as much as a 4" pad with steel 12" on center. One contractor may know local soils or anticipate root problems more than another.
Site prep and cleanup are also important considerations. Simple "add sod" can mean many different things to landscapers/lawn guys. Some companies will till soil prior to laying down sod to make it easier for new roots to take hold, some companies will take away a couple of inches of soil to make certain that there are no low spots that can lead to future growth problems.
Another example, ask about the size of plants being installed. One designer will provide a quotation for large plants that may cost $100 each, while another designer will provide plants for $20 each. If one is quoting more mature plants while the other is quoting young plants, the finished look will be much different, possibly for several years. Depending on your patience to allow growth, you may want to go with the larger plants.

What is the most common type of project or service your company provides?

Our projects are split pretty equally between stone and flatwork (retaining walls, raised beds, flagstone patios), yard recovery/cleanup (major cleaning in fall/spring, reclaiming property that has been neglected), basic yard care, and sprinkler system maintenance. Often retaining walls and sprinkler maintenance include drainage work (for instance french drains)

In what ways is your company environmentally friendly?

We prefer to mulch over bag. We self-compost as much as possible for material we haul away so we can use material in other jobs for landscape mix. We keep our machines tuned properly to limit smoking and burning oil.
We have policies on idling and use of equipment to limit gas use.

How We Charge For Our Services
|
Excavation - Minor Grading or Resloping
- $55.00 to $185.00 per hour (includes machine rental and operator)
- $150.00 to $300.00 per cubic yard
- $800.00 to $2,000.00 per day (about 8 hours)
It depends on definition of minor, the quality of the material being excavated, the equipment needs. A small excavation in clean dirt that results in less than 3 cubic yards can be done with minimal equipment and haul away. This typically costs about $150 per cubic yard, after labor, equipment, and haul away. Larger jobs - or jobs where there is a lot of foreign debris in excavated material - may require more expensive equipment, dump fees, and labor.

Fall Lawn - Rake, Clean, Remove
- $20.00 to $35.00 fixed fee for 1/8 acre lot
- $30.00 to $55.00 fixed fee for 1/4 acre lot (most typical)
- $60.00 to $100.00 fixed fee for 1/2 acre lot
- $75.00 to $200.00 fixed fee per 1 acre
I prefer to do trimming/pruning when leaves are down and mulch instead of bagging. You can really see which branches are dead when about 80% of leaves are off trees. These dead limbs are frequently covered by growth in spring and summer, so it is an ideal time to do pruning. Also, around time of fall cleanup is excellent time to lay down pre-emergent.

Landscape - Install or Plant
- $35.00 to $75.00 per hour (per person) plus materials
A single person job is typically billed at $35/hour which allows time for picking up materials and getting to site. Larger jobs that may require hardscaping, stone work, larger plants (over 25 gallon) typically require additional equipment and a 2-person crew.

Landscape Curbing - Install Concrete
- $3.00 to $15.00 per linear foot (mid-grade concrete)
It all depends on purpose of curb and size and the total length. A 4"x4" curb with minimal steel and minimum excavation is easy. A larger curb with additional drainage considerations in poor soil will cost more.
