What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a company like yours?

The company should own their equipment. Rental yards are nortorious for not maintaining their equipment. Also, if the individual has to rent the grinder, he will have to charge more to cover the cost and time it takes to pick up and turn in rentals. The grinder should be self propelled, hydraulic controls, otherwise, those small manual units will do a poor job.

How much do you charge? I can charge by the hour, $65.00, 1 hour minimum, or by the day for large jobs, $500.00 for 8 hours grinding. I can also charge by the inch. $2.50 per inch, measure the stumps diameter at the widest point. After looking at the job, I give the customer a firm quote which I never exceed.

I recently ground over 100 stumps for a landscaping project. I reduced my daily rate to $350.00 due to most of the stumps actually just being Yaupon stobbs. My wife helped by cutting the many small roots below ground level. That job took 4 days, after which they brought in carpet grass squares and laid them solid across the entire area.

For small jobs, most customers pay in cash. For larger jobs and business owners, I usually get paid by check.
