How Much Does Sump Pump Installation Really Cost?

The average cost of sump pump installation is approximately $1,020 (including a mid-grade submersible sump pump). However, there are several factors that can influence the cost of installation. Use the list below to get a better idea of how much your project will cost.

1. Your geographic location. The cost of installation may vary depending on where you live. If you live in an urban area where the high cost of living, you should expect to pay a little more than the average cost. For example, installation prices are typically higher in Chicago than they are in Memphis, TN.

2. Floods and emergencies. Is the sump pump being installed as the result of a water emergency? Is there standing water in the area right now? Hiring a water removal contractor to clean up the area will add to the cost of sump pump installation. In some cases, your insurance company may cover the cost of water cleanup services. If the area is clean and dry, you should be good to go.

3. Installation or replacement. Are you replacing an existing sump pump? In most cases, replacing an old sump pump will be cheaper than putting in a new one. Starting from scratch requires a a lot more work. Digging a new sump pit and installing the necessary drainage system may increase the cost and timeline of your project.

4. Type of sump pump. There are two main types of sump pumps to choose from:

Submersible sump pumps

Pedestal pumps are almost always cheaper than submersible pumps; however, there are several benefits to installing a submersible pump. In most cases, these pumps are better equipped to handle large quantities of water. Additionally, they tend to be the safer option (especially if you have small children).

5. Sump pump construction. Sump pumps can be made of 1) plastic, 2) steel, or 3) cast iron. While plastic pumps are almost always cheaper, they are not quite as durable as the metal options.

6. Multiple sump pumps. Does it make sense to install more than one sump pump? Depending on the size of your home and the water table in your area, your contractor may recommend installing more than one pump. While there may be a discount on the installation of additional pumps, the overall cost of your project will still be higher.

7. Horsepower. Most residential sump pumps are about 1/3 HP; however, there are also 1/2 HP, 3/4 HP, and 1 HP pumps available. If you are looking for additional horsepower, the cost of your unit will be higher.

8. Battery back-up. Sump pump failure is a constant fear for homeowners. As a result, many sump pumps come with a battery backup. These sump pumps tend to be a little more expensive. You'll be happy you made the investment when the backup kicks on though.

9. Electrical work. Is there already a power outlet nearby? If not, you may need to hire a licensed electrician to come out to your house and install a new outlet for the sump pump. 10. Easy to access. Is the installation area difficult to access? What type of demolition is required for the project? Will the contractor need to jackhammer through concrete floors? Dealing with any of these issues will come at an additional cost. Concrete demolition, in particular, can be pretty expensive.

11. Cleanup. Will the contractor make sure to keep water, dust and debris out of other areas of your home? The cost of cleanup should be included in the cost estimate from your contractor. Make sure it is listed clearly in your itemized cost estimate.
